*Thank you HarperCollins New Zealand for sending me a copy to review* The second book in this trilogy (I’m pretty sure it’s a trilogy) isn’t out until next year and I cannot wait to read it so I can find out what’s next for Mia and the Red Church. I think Mia is one of my new favourite female characters of 2016. She wants to avenge her family and make the people that took her family away suffer but at the same time she doesn’t want to lose a part of herself by joining the Red Church. She’d been through a lot and was a little blunt at times but that’s what I loved about her. It’s not often a book can take me by surprise like that but I have to say Kristoff did it brilliantly. I really should have because after it came out I saw all the things I’d overlooked or just missed. I loved the twist with who was killing people and why at the Red Church and I didn’t see it coming at all. Some of the background information wasn’t told at the start of the book but by the end of the book I think most things had been filled in. I loved how the narrator was never named and it was told like someone was telling Mia’s story to the reader.
I loved how the story was told and I thought the narrator, whoever they are, was kind of funny. There’s magic, plotting, intrigue and a little romance… But only a little. But it was so much more than just a bunch of teenagers learning all the different ways to kill people. It’s a school of assassins so I was definitely expecting a lot of blood and death and Kristoff did not let me down. Nevernight is a pretty brutal book but I was expecting it with Mia training to kill people. I’ve only read Illuminae by Jay Kirstoff and I loved it so I was excited to read this because the synopsis sounded really good.
